Free Ticket Turns into $50,000 Powerball Win for Kansas City Player

Nov 18, 2025

A Missouri Lottery player in Jackson County who won a $50,000 Powerball prize on Oct. 15 had no idea she was holding a $50,000 winning ticket for weeks.

“It’s really funny,” she explained. “I guess I thought the website said it was a winning ticket, like I had won a free ticket, so I had put this ticket to the side.”

Her ticket, purchased at QuikTrip, 6551 E. Front St. in Kansas City, matched four of the five white-ball numbers, as well as the Powerball number.

“I checked the ticket on Monday and it said, ‘Winning ticket – see Lottery,’” she shared. “Then I looked it up on the website and said, ‘Oh my god, I won $50,000!’

“We’re building a house so it’s perfect timing. I do a lot of canning and I think I’m going to buy myself a freeze dryer.”

The winning numbers on Oct. 15 were 10, 13, 28, 34 and 47, and the Powerball number was 15. Powerball is a multi-state Draw Game with drawings held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Wednesday’s estimated jackpot is $593 million.

In FY25, players in Jackson County won more than $96.8 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $8.9 million in commissions and bonuses, and more than $31.6 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
